Mr Jonathan Rees graduated from St Mary’s Hospital Medical School, London. He trained in orthopaedics in Oxford and has Specialist Fellowship training in routine and complex shoulder and elbow surgery. He was appointed as Clinical Lecturer to the Nuffield Department of Orthopaedic Surgery in 2004 and was then appointed as a surgical academic in 2005 becoming the Oxford University Lecturer in Orthopaedic Surgery and Honorary Consultant Shoulder and Elbow Surgeon at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre.
Clinical Programme:
Mr Rees treats all shoulder and elbow conditions and performs all routine and complex shoulder and elbow surgery including arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery. He provides the shoulder and elbow surgical service for the sportsmen and women seen by his colleagues in the OXSPORT sports injuries clinic at the NOC.
Education and Training:
Mr Rees is the head of the orthopaedic training for the Oxford University's undergraduate medical students. He also trains postgraduate orthopaedic surgical trainees and fellowship shoulder and elbow surgeons. Mr Rees sits on regional and national research, education and surgical training committees.
Research Programme:
Mr Rees is involved in large scale clinical trials and in setting up research networks. His other major interest is in surgical technology and surgical skills. He has developed an orthopaedic surgical skills centre that facilitates a programme of research to study the learning and assessment of surgical skill. Future work looks to improve surgical performance through novel virtual reality training platforms and image enhancing surgery.
Many of the hospital consultants work with the University of Oxford’s Nuffield Department of Orthopaedics, Rheumatology and Musculoskeletal Sciences (NDORMS) on clinical trials and research studies, investigating a wide range of diseases of the musculoskeletal system.
