About Us

London Marathon RunnerRunning is important to many of us, from the recreational runner to the national level athlete. Unfortunately 50% of all runners become injured each year. Due to the repetitive nature of running, the way your bones and joints move is critical for avoiding and treating injury, and for maintaining an efficient running style. This is referred to as your biomechanics.

It is difficult to measure these movements with common video analysis techniques. The one or two camera systems that you might see in running shops are only able to measure the way you run in 2D. Research has shown that 2D assessments are often unable to detect the small motion patterns that might cause you to develop a running injury.

run3D at The Oxford Gait Laboratory uses advanced 3D technology – the same technology used by elite athletes, running shoe manufacturers and film studios – to measure the joint angles at your hips, knees and ankles in 3D. Our custom built software compares your running biomechanics to an extensive database of uninjured runners. This enables us to identify any unusual patterns in your running style.

Many overuse and recurring injuries are caused by abnormal running biomechanics, and abnormal biomechanics are often the result of muscle imbalances and muscle weaknesses. Runner in laboratory with markersBy detecting any unusual patterns in the way you run, we can help prevent an injury from developing or identify the root-cause of an existing injury and help prevent it from recurring.

run3D provides you with a scientifically accurate assessment of your running biomechanics. We complement the expertise of other sports therapists and offer you a unique and specialised service, which is not widely available in the UK.

A biomechanical assessment is particularly useful if:

  • you are new to running and want to minimise the likelihood of developing an injury
  • you frequently suffer from the same injury and want to prevent it from recurring
  • you develop an injury as soon as you increase your weekly mileage and want to stop this from happening
  • you want to understand why you have developed a certain injury so that you can optimise your treatment procedures and prevent the injury from recurring

run3D is a private service that is not funded by the NHS. Anyone can book an appointment - there is no need for you to be referred by your GP or other health professional.
