Research is integral to the quality of our care, now and in the future

Research & Development

Our research strategy seeks to promote a faster integration of the outcomes of research into effective modern clinical practice..

The Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre works closely with the Medical Sciences Division of the University of Oxford, which focuses on musculoskeletal science as one of its major research themes. We aim to develop practical treatments for common conditions causing musculo-skeletal disability which have considerable impact on the lives of people of all ages.

Training course for practising clinicians

Sign up for an MSc in Musculoskeletal Sciences. The course has an intake every 2 years and the next programme will commence in January 2014.

For more information and how to apply click here.

The course promotes an understanding of the ways in which research can be used to improve health care in musculoskeletal sciences.

We have concentrated our research efforts into obtaining clinical benefit through improvements in the treatment and understanding of:

  • Ankylosing Spondylitis
  • Back Pain
  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Neurological Rehabilitation
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Osteogenesis Imperfecta
  • Osteoporosis
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE)
  • Vasculitis

These pages are dedicated to letting researchers and the public know about research at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre.

Joint Ventures Lecture Series

Joint Ventures is a series of public information events at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre (NOC) in the form of a pair of short lectures, cluminating with discussion and questions from the floor. The talks are followed by refreshments provided in the cafe area of the atrium at the NOC, where presenters, medical staff and the audience will be able to meet up and continue their discussions.

These talks are being put in place as part of a programme to engage and inform the public of current and future musculoskeletal research plans in Oxford.

The aim of Joint Ventures is to reach as wide an audience as possible in terms of age and subject. The main target audience is shown below:

  • Local residents
  • Charities and patient support groups
  • Oxford University medical students
  • Brookes University - health sciences students
  • Local schools - 6th form students with an interest in medicine
  • Patients in local GP surgeries
  • Current and former patients of the NOC

The series provides an informal and relaxed environment where questions relating to the topic can be asked to the clinicians and researchers.
