Your visit to the Gait Laboratory: “Gait” describes the way you walk.  In the gait lab, we measure how you walk so we can find the best way to help you.

History and Physical Exam

When you come to visit, one of our team will ask you some questions about any current problems you are having with walking, and find out about your medical condition. You will be asked about your current treatment and how you normally get around.  They will also measure your height and leg length; and test your strength and joint movements.

Getting ready

We will use tape to stick reflectors on your skin.  The reflectors help the cameras measure how you walk.  They are not uncomfortable. If you are having your muscle activity measured, then you will also need to wear a small backpack

Walking up and down

We will explain the test to you before you begin.  The lab has lots of cameras and computers which measure the way you walk.  You will be asked to walk up and down the room while being recorded by many different cameras.  We use this information to produce a detailed report about how you walk.

Follow up report

After you have gone, a team of specialists will review the pictures and all the information we have recorded and make recommendations for treatment.  This team will normally include the people who were with you in the lab, as well as the doctor who referred you.  We may recommend that you come back again after treatment to see if it has worked
