What is rehabilitation?

Rehabilitation is an active problem-solving process that has as its object people who have limitations on their ability to undertake activities in life or limitations on their participation in society due to an illness. Concerns are usually identified by the patient but sometimes the patient may be unaware of a particular issue as it primarily affects others.

Rehabilitation focuses on improving a person’s ability and reducing stress and distress. Our service aims to help patients achieve their maximum potential through a personalised rehabilitation programme.

What is enablement?

Enablement is the process of helping an individual achieve his or her own goals - someone is given advice and/or treatment so that they can achieve their potential.

The word enablement transfers at least some responsibility for success to the patient. It implies a more participatory, active collaborative approach that starts from the patient’s own wishes and that will only succeed if the patient is active in the process.

Amputee support group

OWLS (Onward Without Limbs) is an amputee support group which meets informally on the first Monday of each month at the Oxford Centre for Enablement. The group's aim is to help, provide advice and give support to those who have lost limbs or are facing surgery for amputation. Meetings are held in the first floor meeting room from 12 noon to 2pm and drinks and sandwiches are provided.
