Martin McNally is a full time consultant specialising in limb reconstruction. This is a subspeciality of orthopaedic surgery, which deals with the treatment of complications after injury and the correction of limb deformities including limb lengthening. He has a special interest in limb injury, particularly fractures which do not heal (non-union) or have healed in a poor position (malunion). He also leads a specialist team, which runs the only dedicated bone infection unit in the UK.
Martin's training in trauma and orthopaedics was principally in Northern Ireland, where he gained extensive experience in the management of all aspects of injury. Since 1993, he has developed specialist skills in the treatment of complex injuries, particularly infected fractures and fractures with bone loss. He has spent periods of advanced study in Germany, Canada, England, Russia and the USA.
He has received both academic awards and other distinctions. He holds the Martin Medal for Orthopaedic Research, The Sir Walter Mercer Gold Medal from the Intercollegiate Board of the Royal College of Surgeons and the International Society for Fracture Repair Young Investigator Award.
Martin has been awarded research traveling fellowships by the British Orthopaedic Association (1993, 1994, 1996, 1997). In 1996, he was the European Federation Traveling Fellow. He was the Clinical Fellow in Limb Reconstruction, University of Oxford and visiting Fellow to the University of Louisville, Kentucky and the Campbell Clinic Memphis, Tennessee.
Martin has a strong interest and record in teaching and research. He holds the Degree of Doctor of Medicine and has published over twenty papers on fracture care, orthopaedic surgery and the complication of injury and limb surgery.
He serves on the faculties of several international teaching programmes and is a convener for courses in the UK. Martin is also an active member of The British Orthopaedic Association, The British Limb Reconstruction Society and is Head of Surgery at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre.
