Pre-Operative Assessment Clinic (POAC)

If you have been listed for surgery (other than daycase procedures), you will receive a letter to attend a pre-operative assessment clinic a month or so before your planned surgery.

The pre-operative assessment clinic is run by a team of specialist nurses who will help you prepare for your operation, discharge home and recovery.

What to Expect

Your medical fitness for an anaesthetic will be assessed and tests organised as required - most people require at least some blood tests, urine tests and a heart tracing (ECG).

Your consultant or a member of the surgical team will then discuss the proposed operation, as well as answering any questions you may have. You will also be asked to sign a consent form.

You will be seen by a physiotherapist who will show you some exercises for after the operation, and by an occupational therapist who will discuss any adjustments to your home situation that may be helpful for your discharge.
