Wingfield League

Introduction

Welcome to The Wingfield League

The Wingfield League was founded in 1955 by the then Matron Miss Mary Powell.

The purpose of the League was to form a bond of union and friendship between past and present members of the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre staff (previously the Wingfield Morris Orthopaedic Hospital)

Today the League is as active as ever. An annual general meeting of the League is held each April, which allows for a reunion of past and present staff. Over an informal lunch members can catch up with friends, old and new, share news and experiences and hear about the progress of the hospital and its achievements. There are regular ‘set’ reunions of groups of nurses who trained together some over 50 years ago.

Members of the League have contributed their wealth of knowledge of the hospital in two ways recently. They were actively involved in the production of the Heritage Mural which is displayed in the atrium of the hospital and also shared their memories and photos with Martin Harris for the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre – A Pictorial History published in 2011.

The League funds the Wingfield League Scholarship which is open to everyone who has been a member of the League for over a year. The scholarship offers £500 towards travel or study which will support the development of orthopaedic nursing and enhance the work of the hospital in musculoskeletal care.

Membership of the League is available to anyone who has been a member of staff for over a year. Application forms are available from wingfieldleague@yahoo.co.uk
Membership fees are: £7 annually which includes the annual magazine or £2 annually for membership and a newsletter.
