Arts @ NOC - Arts for the hospital

A healing environment provided to uplift and inspire patients, visitors and staff.

Art in Healthcare

Doctors, nurses and therapists have long recognised the importance of pleasant enviroment to help patients recover more quickly. Research shows that music can reduce stress, lower drug intake and help to relieve pain.

Whether you stay for a day or a week, calm and pleasant surroundings help you to relax. Some patients spend a long time in our hospital and for them in particular, a pleasant environment is of vital importance.

Music also improves the healing environment and the performing arts play a major role in the hospital, helping create a soothing, calming environment for patients to recover and a pleasant place for staff and visitors.

Art in the Hospital

The arts programme builds on the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre’s rich heritage and traditions, celebrates the cultural diversity in the hospital as well as broadening our partnerships with the wider community.

We have been working closely with the local artists, schools and art organisations as well as the Oxford Radcliffe Hospital and the Oxford and Buckinghamshire Mental Health Trust to deliver high quality art projects. Local artists regularly display work in the hospital and we engage every year with Oxford Artweeks showing patients' work along side staff and professionals.

The main Outpatients Department has a rolling programme of exhibitions and there are many areas in the hospital to display artwork. New commissions, donation and long term loans are all helping to build the NOC's collection of artwork and the NOC's Heritage Project will culminate in a large display for the main atrium.

Funding

All funding for the arts programme is raised privately from charitable trusts, individuals, patient donations and businesses. We need gifts and sponsorship to help us to develop this important part of the healthcare environment. Going into hospital can be a worrying and stressful time. Please help us to provide art in all its forms to help our patients' recovery.
